The Pink Dread - Update v1.1


Hi guys, welcome to this short devlog! It's been fun creating and playing with my latest game "The Pink Dread", which is also the first 2D game I've published here in itch.io. So I've continued the development of this game and planned on adding bit by bit some changes over the coming weeks. Today, the update is all about new obstacles, giving mobile browser support, score system tweaks, and improving the game overall with some bug fixes and polish.

Obstacles + Score Points

  • Morning Star - attached to a chain, this obstacle swings overhead in a circular fashion. Destroying it offers 5 points.
  • Arrow - prompted by a sharp sound effect, this object flies straight parallel to the platform. Gives 1 point.
  • Dagger Arm - vertically appears from below and hides itself to avoid firebolts. Hit it to gain 2 points.
  • Sapphire Boulder -a massive obstacle that drops from the sky and rolls forward on the platform. Hard to maneuver but if you destroy it, it will grant you 5 points!
  • Wooden Sheep - the initial, non-moving obstacle but will kill the player if it comes to contact. Blast it for 1 point.

Other Changes

  • UI rearranged, plus added a game over screen showing the final score of the run.
  • Player jump increased to reach long platform gaps.
  • Moved spawn positions of obstacles to give more space for player to jump on or to move about.
  • Added a unique "Death By" dialogue for each obstacle that kills the player.
  • Left mouse button input as an alternative button.
  • Player shadow now scales depending on height from platform instead of fading it out.
  • Extended the background to accommodate different screen widths.
  • Decreased the top height limit for camera so player can still see the platforms below.

Known Bugs

  • When player jumps from below the platform, it detects the ground but still falls down.
  • Casting a firebolt just as the player comes up from beneath the platform, it gets stuck and does not explode.
  • Controls or input sometimes doesn't respond, mostly causing the player to die at obstacles, ending the run.

Next week, I plan on implementing new environment backgrounds as well as atmosphere color changes and already have a couple of ideas in mind. But if you guys have some ideas, feel free to share them and well try and add them as well.
