The Boy VS Junkfood - v1.0 Major Update!


Hi everyone, me and my team are very happy to announce the post-jam/full version of "The Boy VS Junkfood"!
So many things have been added & improved since the GMTK 2021 game-jam ended. Take a look below for the list of changes:

Version 1.0

  • Now uses Unity's new input system. But gamepad controls are not yet 100% available.
  • Precision aiming and line of sight. The projectile should pass through the center of the crosshair.
  • Player starting point have been adjusted more towards the right side of kitchen counter.
  • Boy moves faster when not equipping a weapon.
  • Feet moves while adjusting aim beyond max body pivot.
  • Player projectile (toothpick) now pierces through enemies.
  • Player projectile bounces off solid walls.
  • Boy only strafes when holding a weapon.
  • Player can dodge to nudge off enemies. Also it will slightly nudge the companion and boss.
  • Momma Tomato is now bigger to really give that payload feel.
  • Momma Tomato can also dash/charge when she had enough hits. She also uses this to break checkpoint walls (wafers).
  • Also, Momma Tomato will drop health orbs when hit.
  • Toothpick cups are placed in different areas to supply the player toothpick ammo. When out of its supply, it will have a slight reload time.
  • Toothpick ammo now drops 10 pieces instead of 5.
  • Picking up ammo will depend on the players ammo space. Example, if you have 8, you'll only get 2 pieces from the pile.
  • A.I. minions will now behave more erratically. Being slightly unpredictable.
  • A.I. minions will also spawn from a specific point (with a bit of randomness), rather than random on the floor near the player.
  • Ranged A.I. now spawns a physical (Green Pea) projectile rather than a magic bullet.
  • Enemy spawns incrementally and in waves, but in the boss area it will be continuous until boss is defeated.
  • Boss phase will now spawn walls to close the player in and limit the combat area.
  • Boss is also tougher and uses magic to create a barrier while channeling summon.
  • Environment now has some appliance wires and sockets near the wall. Also a cabinet model by the upper-corner wall.
  • Level has invisible walls to prevent player from falling off the counter.
  • Boss area has been rearranged to present more floor to move around.
  • Visual indicators like the companion compass, input direction arrow and dialogue cloud bubble have been added.
  • New custom effects replaced the bought VFX.
  • A couple of subtle environment VFX have been added as well.
  • Cutscenes are now in the game. Can be skipped by pressing "escape" then holding down "space" till it's complete.
  • Various sound effects added. Like footsteps, shooting, hits, screams and also a death sting.
  • Different music will play depending on the scene you're on. Like the main menu, cutscenes, gameplay & etc...
  • Most gameplay HUD elements have been increased in scale.
  • Companion and Boss health bar will now display accordingly to gameplay sequence.
  • Dialogue lines have been modified. Also changed its font for more readability.
  • Score multiplier and score display are now available.
  • Highscore have also been added. You'll have the ability to reset this in the main menu on the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Options are now available, but limited only to sound, music mute and also graphics quality to High, Medium, Low.
  • Lighting and Post-Processing have been tweaked.
  • Credits scene now display different backdrop images. Also modified and added some information.
  • Loading screen offers some game info and displays a loading bar.
  • Fixed the checkpoint reset of player, companion, enemy wave and boss phase.
  • Fixed the end trigger to complete the level.
  • Momma Tomato will also free her babies from the cage.
  • and multiple bug fixes; like toothpick curving midair, hit effects appearing even when not hit, throwing toothpicks doesn't spawn projectiles, menu navigation and much more!

We have retained the game-jam version if you choose to try it out. Also, let us know for any bugs in the new version if you find any, it's greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading this far into the devlog. Hope you check out the game and have fun playing! 😊
